CLEARWATER, FL. - Red Star Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of Darran Brown, Founder and CEO of Go Charity, to its Advisory Board.

An entrepreneur, fundraising innovator, and longtime supporter of the nonprofit community, Brown brings more than 25 years of experience helping charitable organizations strengthen their fundraising efforts, build meaningful partnerships, and expand their impact.

Brown founded Go Charity in New York City in 1999 after beginning his professional career as a foreign exchange trader in the international banking industry. What started as a sports memorabilia venture grew under his leadership into a nationally recognized fundraising company specializing in luxury auctions, experiences, and charitable events.

Today, Go Charity works with hundreds of nonprofit events each year, helping organizations generate critical funding while creating memorable experiences that deepen donor engagement and advance their missions.

Brown credits much of his entrepreneurial approach to the combination of discipline and creativity he learned from his parents. His father’s strong work ethic and his mother’s artistic spirit helped shape a leadership philosophy centered on hard work, innovation, relationships, and finding creative ways to make a meaningful difference.

A New Yorker through and through, Brown launched Go Charity in the Wall Street area and has maintained a deep connection to New York City and its nonprofit community throughout his career. His belief in giving back, developing lasting relationships, and using business as a force for good closely aligns with the mission of Red Star Foundation.

As a member of the Red Star Foundation Advisory Board, Brown will provide insight and guidance in the areas of fundraising, strategic partnerships, nonprofit growth, special events, and national brand development as the Foundation continues expanding its mission across the country.

Brown is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he played collegiate soccer. He lives in New York City with his two dogs and is an avid motorcyclist.

His appointment adds another experienced nonprofit and business leader to Red Star Foundation’s growing network of advisors working to strengthen the organization’s national reach, partnerships, fundraising capacity, and long-term impact.

Veteran and military-focused storyteller brings nearly two decades of experience in strategic communications, filmmaking, fundraising, and nonprofit leadership to Red Star Foundation.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Red Star Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of Bob Vincent, founder and president of Reel Heroes Media, to its Board of Advisors.

Vincent is an executive producer, creative director, filmmaker, photographer, and strategic storyteller who has spent nearly two decades helping mission-driven organizations communicate their purpose, preserve meaningful stories, and inspire people to take action.

A nationally recognized storyteller, Vincent has been featured multiple times in U.S. Veterans Magazine for his work supporting veterans and military families through visual storytelling. In 2018, he received the Carlton Sherwood Media Award from the Blinded American Veterans Foundation, presented on Flag Day in the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs hearing room at the United States Capitol, recognizing his outstanding service to American veterans, especially those with sensory disabilities.

Throughout his career, Vincent has worked with nonprofit organizations, Fortune 500 companies, military leaders, first responders, entertainers, innovators, and community organizations across the country. His extensive experience in strategic communications, partnership development, fundraising storytelling, and live-event production will help Red Star Foundation expand its national reach and strengthen its ability to serve current military, veterans, first responders, and Red Star Families.

For more than a decade, Vincent supported American Airlines Military & Veterans Initiatives, including American Airlines Sky Ball, Snowball Express, Salute to the Troops, Invincible Spirit Festivals, and other national programs honoring wounded veterans, Gold Star Families, military caregivers, and first responders.

He has also worked alongside organizations and companies including the Gary Sinise Foundation, DEKA Research & Development, Disney, MGM Resorts International, the USO, Airpower Foundation, Abby Adams Kids, and Red Star Foundation. His work has included documentaries, advocacy films, national fundraising campaigns, photography, live-event productions, and strategic communications supporting charitable organizations and the communities they serve.

Vincent has produced hundreds of films, documentaries, and live productions. His career highlights include producing the International Space Station opening film for American Airlines Sky Ball and creating the “Save the iBOT” advocacy film, narrated by Gary Sinise, which inventor Dean Kamen later described as “the most valuable tool in our toolbox” for helping communicate the importance of continuing the next-generation iBOT Mobility System. He also produced the documentary Lucca, which has been viewed more than 212,000 times, along with fundraising and storytelling campaigns that have helped support millions of dollars in charitable giving.

Vincent has also served as a contributing writer for U.S. Veterans Magazine, authoring a feature article documenting the 2020 National Medal of Honor Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, where Reel Heroes Media produced the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Patriot Awards Gala.

As a member of the Red Star Foundation Board of Advisors, Vincent will provide guidance in the areas of:

Vincent earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Programming Technology from Purdue University, with a minor in Networking & Telecommunications Technology. He is also an FAA Part 107-certified Remote Pilot and previously founded Video Pilot 360 before launching Reel Heroes Media.

Red Star Foundation Welcomes Colonel Kris Saling to Its Board of Advisors

Red Star Foundation is proud to announce that Colonel Kris Saling, U.S. Army Retired, has joined our Board of Advisors.

Colonel Saling brings more than 25 years of distinguished military service, transformational leadership, and nationally recognized expertise in workforce strategy, talent management, data analytics, and artificial intelligence.

A graduate of the United States Military Academy, Colonel Saling earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Operations Research and began her Army career as an engineer officer. She served as a platoon leader with the 864th Combat Engineer Battalion at Fort Lewis and later as a platoon leader and executive officer with the 14th Combat Engineer Battalion during its deployment to Iraq.

She went on to command engineer companies with the 29th and 65th Engineer Battalions at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and deployed again to Iraq as the Division Engineer Plans Officer for the 25th Infantry Division.

After 12 years as an engineer officer, Colonel Saling transferred into Operations Research and Systems Analysis. She subsequently served as a strategic analyst for U.S. Army Pacific Command, led officer strength analysis and forecasting for Headquarters, Department of the Army G-1, served as Chief Analytics Officer for the Army Talent Management Task Force, and later served as Chief Technology Officer for Army Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

Colonel Saling currently serves as Director of Workforce Transformation at Imagine Believe Realize, where she leads the Human Resources and Human Capital Center of Excellence. In this role, she helps federal and commercial organizations prepare for the future of work and successfully integrate human and machine workforces.

She holds a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Missouri University of Science and Technology and a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia, where she specialized in data mining and complexity science. Her graduate research on high-reliability systems was later published in two respected operations research academic journals.

Colonel Saling is the author of Data-Driven Talent Management and a doctoral candidate at the University of Miami, where her research focuses on workforce transformation and the adoption of artificial intelligence. She is also a nationally recognized speaker on people analytics, organizational transformation, and AI adoption.

Her awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge. She is also a recipient of the Military Operations Research Society’s Hughes Award, which recognizes the Department of Defense’s top analyst under the age of 40.

Colonel Saling’s experience leading complex organizations, using data to improve decision-making, and transforming how institutions support their people will be invaluable as Red Star Foundation continues expanding its national mission to prevent suicide and support the families of current military, veterans, and first responders who have died by suicide.

CLEARWATER, FL, June 26, 2026, Red Star Foundation is proud to announce that Kristen Christy has been named as a Red Star Families Ambassador, recognizing her extraordinary leadership, lived experience, and national impact in suicide prevention, resilience training, and military family advocacy.

Kristen Christy is a Red Star Wife whose life and work have been shaped by unimaginable loss, resilience, and purpose. After the suicide of her first husband following a deployment, Kristen dedicated her life to helping others find hope, connection, and the strength to keep going. Her personal journey, including the suicide attempts of both of her sons and the challenges her family has faced through mental illness, has made her one of the nation’s most powerful voices for families impacted by suicide. Kristen is widely known as “America’s Resilience Trainer.” She is an international speaker, trainer, writer, coach, and Master Resilience Trainer for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. She has delivered more than 400 suicide prevention and resilience presentations across five countries to military installations, veteran organizations, corporations, and community groups.

Most notably, Kristen helped co-create the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in collaboration with national leaders. Since its creation, 988 has answered millions of calls and texts from people in crisis across the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, and military communities abroad.

As a Red Star Families Ambassador, Kristen will help Red Star Foundation expand awareness of the Red Star Banner, support families who have lost a loved one to suicide, reduce stigma, and strengthen the Foundation’s national effort to prevent suicide among current military, veterans, first responders, and surviving families.

The Red Star Service Banner was created as a national symbol of recognition, remembrance, and hope for families of current military, veterans, and first responders who died by suicide. Red Star Foundation provides banners free of charge to next of kin and is building a nationwide support network for Red Star Families.

“I am honored to serve as a Red Star Families Ambassador,” said Kristen Christy. “As a Red Star wife, I know the pain that comes with losing someone you love to suicide. Kristen’s national recognition includes being named the 2018 Air Force Spouse of the Year, a 2019 Top 30 Women Military Influencer, a 2020 Remarkable Woman finalist, a 2021 Force for Change National Award winner, and a 2024 Top 25 Military Pioneer and Changemaker. She is also the creator of National Resilience Day, observed on March 4, and serves as an advisory board member for the University of Texas at Austin Moody College of Communication. Red Star Foundation Welcomes Dr. Kent A. Corso to Board of Advisors as Suicidologist

The Red Star Foundation is proud to announce that Dr. Kent A. Corso, PsyD, BCBA-D, has joined the organization’s Board of Advisors as a suicidologist, bringing more than two decades of national and international leadership in suicide prevention, intervention, postvention, behavioral health integration, and military and veteran behavioral health.

Dr. Corso is a highly respected clinical psychologist, behavior analyst, U.S. Air Force veteran, and founder of PROSPER, which stands for Proactive Reduction Of Suicide in Populations via Evidence-based Research. PROSPER is an evidence-based suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention model that has been recognized by state and federal agencies and has been implemented across the United States, Canada, Asia, Australia, Europe, and other regions. According to his professional background, Dr. Corso has trained more than 250,000 people and helped achieve community suicide reductions ranging from 47% to 60% in several high-risk populations and communities.

“Dr. Kent Corso brings exactly the kind of proven, science-based leadership Red Star needs as we continue building a national model for suicide prevention and family support,” said Jerry Shaffer, Founder and CEO of the Red Star Foundation. “His experience working with service members, veterans, first responders, federal agencies, and communities across the country will help strengthen our programs, guide our strategy, and, most importantly, help save lives.”

Dr. Corso previously served as Special Advisor to the Commissioner for Behavioral Safety and Risk Management and Suicide Prevention Program Manager for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the largest law enforcement organization in the world, with more than 45,000 law enforcement officers and over 64,000 total employees. In that role, he led suicide prevention efforts, advised senior leadership, developed policy, analyzed suicide trends, created training curriculum, and helped reduce CBP suicides by nearly half.

His background also includes extensive work with the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency, National Guard Bureau, Defense Suicide Prevention Program Office, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, U.S. Air Force, Give an Hour, and other military-connected and behavioral health organizations. He has helped develop behavioral health programs serving hundreds of thousands of patients and has contributed to DoD-wide behavioral health integration efforts impacting more than two million patients.

For the Red Star Foundation, Dr. Corso’s addition represents a major step forward in advancing the organization’s mission to prevent suicide among service members, veterans, first responders, and their families, while also supporting the Red Star Families left behind after a suicide loss.

Red Star’s work includes the Red Star Service Banner, Red Star Service Pin, Red Star Voices, Roll Call, Code Red, peer-to-peer support, public awareness, family recognition, and suicide prevention initiatives designed to reach people before crisis becomes tragedy. Dr. Corso’s expertise will help guide the development, measurement, and expansion of these programs as Red Star continues building a national movement around connection, prevention, and support.

“Suicide prevention cannot be built on awareness alone,” Shaffer added. “It requires training, data, research, peer connection, early intervention, and a deep understanding of what families and communities need before and after a crisis. Dr. Corso has spent his career doing that work at the highest levels.”

Dr. Corso has published more than 50 peer-reviewed research papers, posters, and presentations in suicidology and behavioral sciences, and has authored a book and two book chapters on behavioral health integration. He has also served in numerous academic, advisory, and leadership roles, including work with the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, the Association for Behavior Analysis International Military and Veterans Special Interest Group, the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association, and the Standard Celeration Society.

As a member of the Red Star Foundation Board of Advisors, Dr. Corso will provide subject matter expertise in suicide prevention strategy, program design, evidence-based training, community intervention, postvention support, and outcome measurement.

Dunedin, FL – A powerful movement to recognize and support families impacted by suicide continues to gain momentum across the United States. That movement reached another milestone as the City of Dunedin, Florida was officially proclaimed a Red Star City, becoming the second city in the nation to receive this designation.

This proclamation, issued by Mayor Moe Freaney and the Dunedin City Commission, also formally recognizes March 21 as Red Star Families Day, remembering the families of current military, veterans, and first responders who have died by suicide.

A Community Taking Action Located along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Dunedin has long been known for its strong sense of community and civic engagement. With a population of just over 36,000 residents, the city has built a reputation for bringing people together around causes that matter.

Nic Vandre is a Special Operations veteran, national security leader, and mission-driven philanthropist with more than 20 years of service within United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM). His career has been built alongside the very communities Red Star Foundation exists to serve, giving him a firsthand understanding of the invisible wounds of service and the lasting impact they have on military families.

Throughout his career, Nic has witnessed the reality of veteran suicide up close. He has seen the gap between available support and the families who struggle to access it, and he understands that the impact of suicide extends far beyond the individual. It affects millions of loved ones who often go unseen, unheard, and unsupported. That understanding aligns directly with Red Star Foundation’s mission to recognize and support families of military, veteran, and first responder suicides.

Nic brings exceptional operational credibility and a powerful national network to Red Star Foundation. As the former Director of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships at U.S. Army Special Operations Command, he built and led an ecosystem that connected government, private sector, and emerging technology partners to solve complex challenges at speed. His ability to build infrastructure, create partnerships, and execute at scale will play a critical role in accelerating Red Star’s national expansion.

Today, Nic serves as Senior Director of Growth at 10x National Security and leads Military and Community Ventures at 21CV, where he continues to bridge the gap between mission-driven initiatives, corporate partnerships, and national impact. He also serves on multiple boards and advisory roles across the defense, technology, and veteran support ecosystem, further expanding his reach and influence.

As an Advisory Board member, Nic will support Red Star Foundation in advancing key initiatives including the Red Star Service Banner, national peer-to-peer networks, legislative advocacy, and suicide prevention efforts. His experience in building high-impact ecosystems and aligning diverse stakeholders will be instrumental in ensuring that every family navigating the loss of a loved one to suicide knows that they are not alone.

Historic Legislation Introduced to Officially Recognize the Red Star Service Banner

Today marks a milestone in national recognition for families affected by military and veteran suicide. On March 5, 2026, members of the U.S. House of Representatives introduced H.R. 7815, a bill to amend Title 36 of the United States Code to establish the Red Star Service Banner as an officially recognized national service banner.

The Red Star Service Banner, created by the Red Star Foundation to honor and remember service members and veterans who died by suicide. Represents a powerful symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and the ongoing impact of military service on families. This banner joins the tradition of official service banners that recognize military service and loss, extending that tradition to include the profound loss felt by those whose loved ones died by suicide.

What the Bill Does

H.R. 7815 would:

Amend Title 36 of the U.S. Code, the section of federal law that designates and governs official national emblems, patriotic holidays, and service banners.

Officially establish the Red Star Service Banner as a nationally recognized emblem, giving statutory acknowledgment to its meaning and importance.

Provide a federal reference for the banner that enables broader awareness, respect, and use in ceremonies, institutions, and commemorations across the country.

The bill was introduced by a bipartisan group of members of Congress, led by Representative Jack Bergman of Michigan, with support from several co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle. Representative Gus M. Bilirakis (R-FL), Representative Mike Bost (R-IL), Representative J. Luis Correa (D-CA), Representative Neal P. Dunn (R-FL), and Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL). The measure, H.R. 7815, was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary for further consideration as it begins its journey through Congress.

Why This Matters

For too long, families who have lost a loved one to military suicide have lacked formal recognition from the federal government for their sacrifice. While service flags have long honored those serving in uniform and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in combat, there has not been an official symbol that acknowledges the unique and deeply personal loss of suicide within the military and veteran community.

The Red Star Service Banner fills that void. Giving millions of families, advocates, and communities a respectful and enduring symbol that acknowledges their grief, honors their loved ones, and helps sustain awareness and conversation around veteran suicide and prevention.

John brings more than three decades of experience building, scaling, and sustaining mission-driven organizations that serve veterans, people with disabilities, and their families. His career is defined by disciplined growth, accountability, and a deep understanding of how to turn urgency into long-term impact.

A Proven Architect of Scale at Wounded Warrior Project

John spent over 20 years helping transform Wounded Warrior Project from a small, early-stage nonprofit into one of the largest and most recognizable veteran service organizations in the United States. As Executive Vice President of Direct Response, he led all direct response fundraising efforts across direct mail, digital, and direct response television.

During his tenure, John was instrumental in building the systems and infrastructure that powered WWP’s growth. He helped establish diversified revenue channels, donor databases, and scalable operational frameworks that ultimately generated more than $3.4 billion in funds raised, representing the majority of the organization’s lifetime revenue. His work laid the foundation for sustainable growth, donor trust, and national reach.

Just as importantly, John’s leadership emphasized transparency, accountability, and alignment between mission and operations-principles that remain essential for any organization operating at scale.

CLEARWATER, FL – November 25, 2025 - The City of Clearwater has made history as the first municipality in the United States to be officially recognized as a Red Star City by the Red Star Foundation, marking a groundbreaking commitment to honor and support the families of military service members, veterans, and first responders who have died by suicide.

On September 29, 2025, the Clearwater City Council unanimously adopted Resolution No. 25-13, introduced and signed by Mayor Bruce Rector, formally proclaiming Clearwater as a Red Star City. This designation reflects the city’s deep commitment to raising awareness about the mental health crisis among those who serve and to providing lasting support for the families left behind, known as Red Star Families.

“Clearwater is proud to lead the way in recognizing the families of our nation’s heroes who have carried the invisible wounds of war and service,” said Mayor Bruce Rector. “By becoming the first Red Star City, we are sending a clear message: their loved ones’ sacrifices will never be forgotten, and their families will never stand alone.”

The Red Star City program, created by the Red Star Foundation, partners with municipalities across America to recognize the devastating impact of suicide among service members, veterans and first responders. Each Red Star City pledges to promote suicide awareness and prevention, support local families affected by suicide, and host events of remembrance and healing.

As part of its designation, Clearwater will officially recognize March 21st as Red Star Family Day. A day dedicated to honoring Red Star Families and advancing suicide prevention efforts through education, remembrance, and community engagement. “Clearwater’s leadership is historic,” said Jerry Shaffer, CEO of the Red Star Foundation. “This first in the nation designation shines a light on the often-overlooked families of those lost to suicide and sets the standard for cities nationwide. Together, we are building a movement of remembrance, action, and hope.”

Sedor brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in enterprise risk management, organizational strategy, and governance to the Foundation’s mission of supporting military service members, veterans, first responders, and their families. Especially those impacted by suicide.

Sedor currently leads Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) at GBU Financial Life, where she oversees the company’s risk management posture, corporate insurance program, and outsourced Internal Audit services. A Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), she has built a reputation for cultivating strong risk cultures and embedding enterprise-wide risk awareness.

Her career includes seven years at Highmark Health, the nation’s second largest blended health organization, where she directed the Enterprise Risk Strategy team, and 15 years at a top 25 U.S. bank, where she launched and grew the bank’s first ERM program.

“Bobbi’s experience in building sustainable systems, creating accountability, and guiding organizations through risk and governance challenges will be invaluable as Red Star continues to expand its national impact,” said Jerry Shaffer, Chief Executive Office. “We are honored to welcome her to our Board of Directors.”

Today We Turn One Year Old!

On August 7, 2024, the Red Star Foundation was born from heartbreak. Out of the pain of losing heroes to suicide came a mission of hope, purpose and action. Today, on our first birthday, we look back at what has been accomplished in just twelve months, and look ahead with determination to the work still to be done.

One Year of Purpose

From the very beginning, our mission has been clear: to eradicate military, veteran and first responder suicides, and to stand beside the families left behind. Every step we’ve taken has been rooted in honoring those we’ve lost, raising awareness and creating real pathways for prevention and support.

One Year of Impact

In just one year, we have:

Launched National Initiatives such as the Red Star Pledge, Red Star Banner and Red Star Voices programs. Empowering individuals, families and communities to take action against suicide.

We’ve honored the fallen through the unveiling of the Red Star Service Banner and Pin, ensuring families of suicide loss are recognized with dignity and respect.

Started to build a growing network of families, advocates, veterans, first responders and supporters across the country who are committed to ending this epidemic together.

Created awareness nationwide by hosting events, forming partnerships and amplifying the voices of Red Star Families so their stories are never forgotten.

One Year of Community

None of this could have been done alone. Our first year has shown the power of community, People coming together from every walk of life, united by compassion and the belief that every life has value. Red Star Foundation’s “Red Star Ruckers” Join the Fight Against Military Suicide at the Defender 5K

The Red Star Foundation is proud to announce that its team, the “Red Star Ruckers”, will be participating in the upcoming Defender 5K, a powerful community event dedicated to raising awareness and support for military and veteran suicide prevention. The event includes a 2.2-mile ruck march to honor those who carried the burden of service and are no longer with us.

The Defender 5K is hosted by the Sgt. Anthony Patrick Muhlstadt Foundation and serves as a moving tribute to the lives lost to suicide. This year’s walk will remember all who served, with a special tribute to Marine Anthony Muhlstadt, who died by suicide on November 19, 2021. Known as a “Defender” by those who loved him, Anthony stood up for others both in and out of uniform. Participants are invited to join his family and friends after the walk to celebrate what would have been his birthday.

Leading the Red Star Ruckers in the 2.2-mile ruck march will be José Pequeño, a Marine and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant whose story of resilience has inspired many. In 2006, while on patrol in Iraq, José was gravely injured by a suicide bomber. Despite devastating injuries, including the loss of part of his brain, José has continued to serve as a symbol of sacrifice, strength, and service.

“This march is about more than remembrance,” said Jerry Shaffer from the Red Star Foundation. “It’s a call to action to prevent future losses and support the families and service members still fighting silent battles. We ruck to carry the weight they no longer can.”

The public is encouraged to attend, support, and march alongside the Red Star Ruckers and José Pequeño to raise both awareness and critical funding for suicide prevention efforts.

Why Clearwater, Florida?

Clearwater serves as an ideal base for the foundation due to its proximity to several veteran and first responder communities. Additionally, being based in Florida allows the foundation to easily reach families across the southeastern United States, an area that has seen some of the highest numbers of veteran suicides in recent years. With its roots in Clearwater, Red Star Foundation plans to expand its outreach nationwide, building partnerships with organizations across the country to ensure that families everywhere have access to the support they need.

As Red Star Foundation grows, it aims to raise awareness about the mental health struggles that veterans and first responders face. By encouraging the community to participate-through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word-Red Star Foundation hopes to create lasting change and honor the sacrifices made by veterans and first responders.
