The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs publishes official counts in its National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, which covers deaths of veterans recorded as suicide. America's Warrior Partnership's Operation Deep Dive research uses a broader method that also counts self-injury mortality among former service members, so its estimates are higher.
