Resource Directory

Resource Directory Inclusion Criteria

Dedicated to Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention

Who Can Be Listed?

The Red Star Foundation National Suicide Prevention & Postvention Resource Directory connects current military, veterans, first responders and families affected by suicide with organizations providing meaningful prevention, intervention and postvention services. Every resource listed must demonstrate a direct or clearly identifiable connection to suicide prevention, suicide loss support or reducing recognized suicide risk factors.

All qualified organizations can apply for listing free of charge.

Eligible Suicide Prevention Services

Eligible resources fall into four categories. An organization may provide services in more than one.

A. Suicide Prevention

Eligible services include:

  • Suicide prevention education and awareness
  • Suicide risk screening and assessment
  • Mental health counseling and treatment
  • Peer-to-peer support and connection programs
  • Suicide prevention training
  • Substance use treatment and recovery
  • Programs addressing isolation and hopelessness
  • Evidence-informed resilience and wellness programs

B. Suicide Crisis Intervention

Eligible services include:

  • Suicide prevention hotlines
  • Crisis text and online chat services
  • Mobile crisis response teams
  • Emergency behavioral health services
  • Crisis stabilization and safety planning
  • Referral and crisis navigation programs

C. Suicide Postvention

Eligible services include:

  • Suicide loss survivor support groups
  • Suicide-related grief counseling
  • Support for families impacted by suicide
  • Bereavement programs for children and spouses
  • Suicide loss peer-support networks
  • Community suicide postvention programs
  • Programs addressing suicide risk among survivors
  • Memorial and remembrance programs with a defined suicide postvention purpose

D. Services Addressing Suicide Risk Factors

Preventing suicide extends beyond traditional mental health treatment. Potentially eligible services include:

  • Financial hardship assistance
  • Housing and homelessness prevention
  • Employment and career transition
  • Food insecurity and essential needs
  • Substance use recovery
  • Legal and benefits assistance
  • Family stabilization and relationship support
  • Social connection, recreation and peer engagement

Important qualification

Providing one of these services does not automatically qualify an organization. The organization must demonstrate how its specific services meaningfully contribute to suicide prevention, intervention, postvention or addressing recognized suicide risk factors.

Potentially Eligible

A veteran housing assistance program that provides crisis housing or stabilizing support for veterans facing homelessness and related suicide risk factors.

Generally Not Eligible

A general housing rental website with no identifiable suicide prevention or crisis-related services.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Organizations must satisfy the following:

  1. Demonstrate relevance to suicide prevention, intervention, postvention or recognized suicide risk factors.
  2. Provide active, identifiable services.
  3. Maintain a verifiable organizational identity.
  4. Supply valid contact information.
  5. Clearly describe services and eligibility requirements.
  6. Identify populations served and geographic availability.
  7. Provide accurate and reasonably current information.
  8. Maintain appropriate licensing where required by law.
  9. Follow responsible practices that do not promote self-harm or unsafe treatment.
  10. Cooperate with reasonable requests for updated information.

Organizations do not need to be nonprofit organizations to qualify. Government agencies, nonprofit organizations, faith-based programs, community groups and qualified for-profit organizations may be eligible.

Directory inclusion and verification are free. Donations, sponsorships and financial contributions do not influence inclusion decisions.

Resources That Do Not Qualify

The directory generally excludes:

  • Organizations with no identifiable suicide prevention or postvention connection
  • Unrelated commercial advertisements
  • General business directories
  • Inactive organizations
  • Programs with unverifiable services or identities
  • Organizations misrepresenting their credentials or services
  • Programs making unsupported guarantees of preventing suicide
  • Organizations promoting dangerous or exploitative practices
  • Services whose primary purpose is unrelated commercial promotion

When eligibility is unclear, an organization may provide additional documentation explaining how its services relate to suicide prevention, intervention, postvention or recognized suicide risk factors.

How Resources Are Reviewed

  1. Step 1: Organization submits information.
  2. Step 2: Red Star reviews suicide-related relevance.
  3. Step 3: Organizational identity and available services are checked.
  4. Step 4: Listing is approved, returned for clarification or declined.
  5. Step 5: Eligible organizations may undergo a separate verification review.
  6. Step 6: Information may be updated or reviewed periodically.

Red Star Verified Resource Status

Approval for directory inclusion and Red Star Verified Resource status are separate decisions. An organization can be listed without being verified. A Verified Resource badge appears only after a Red Star Foundation administrator explicitly approves verification.

Directory inclusion does not constitute medical accreditation, clinical endorsement or a guarantee of service availability or outcomes. Red Star Verified Resource status signifies completion of Red Star Foundation's published verification requirements and explicit administrative approval.

Corrections and Reconsideration

Organizations and directory users may report inaccurate information, unavailable services or other listing concerns. Every organization page includes a Report an Issue With a Listing section where you can identify incorrect contact information, a service that is no longer available, an incorrect service area, misleading information, a potential safety concern or another concern. Reports go to Red Star Foundation administrators, and personal information from reports is never published.

Organizations may request reconsideration after a declined application or suspended listing. Contact Red Star Foundation and choose National Resource Directory as the reason for contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is listing in the directory free?

Yes. Applying, being listed and completing verification are free. Donations, sponsorships and financial contributions do not influence inclusion decisions.

Does an organization need to be a nonprofit?

No. Government agencies, nonprofit organizations, faith-based programs, community groups and qualified for-profit organizations may be eligible if they meet the inclusion criteria.

Can mental health providers participate?

Yes. Mental health counseling and treatment is an eligible suicide prevention service. Providers must hold any licensing required by law.

Can organizations addressing housing or financial hardship qualify?

They can, when they show how their specific services help reduce recognized suicide risk factors. Providing housing or financial help alone does not automatically qualify an organization.

Does Red Star accept local and regional organizations?

Yes. Local, regional, statewide and nationwide organizations may apply. Each listing identifies its geographic availability.

Does directory inclusion mean an organization is verified?

No. Directory inclusion and Red Star Verified Resource status are separate. Verified status requires completing the published verification requirements and explicit approval by a Red Star Foundation administrator.

How can an organization update its information?

An authorized representative can sign in, claim the listing and submit updates through the registration portal. Every update is reviewed before it is published.

How can someone report an inaccurate resource?

Use the Report an Issue With a Listing section on the organization's directory page. A reviewer checks every report.

Can organizations request reconsideration after being declined?

Yes. Organizations may request reconsideration after a declined application or suspended listing by contacting Red Star Foundation and providing additional documentation.

Does Red Star endorse every listed organization?

No. Directory inclusion does not constitute medical accreditation, clinical endorsement or a guarantee of service availability or outcomes.
